Nonverbal Communication
What is Nonverbal Communication?
Nonverbal communication refers to the conveyance of information or the expression of one's thoughts and feelings without the use of spoken words. This can include body language, facial expressions, gestures, posture, eye contact, and other physical cues that can communicate messages or influence the negotiation process.
Nonverbal Communication Examples
During a high-stakes negotiation meeting between two companies discussing a merger, one of the CEOs frequently checks their watch and maintains a closed body posture (crossed arms and legs), signalling impatience and disinterest. The other party notices these nonverbal cues and interprets them as a lack of genuine commitment to the negotiation, leading them to adopt a more defensive stance, which could potentially hinder the progress of the merger discussions.
